I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO UPGRADING MY 60GB PS3 INTO A 500GB PS3. I WAS LOOKING AT CUSTOMER REVIEWS ON BOTH THE SEAGATE AND WESTERN DIGITALS, AND HEARD THAT BOTH ARE COMPATIBLE AND RELIABLE. BASED ON THE REVIEWS I BOUGHT THE 500GB SEAGATE HDD AND THOUGHT THIS WOULD WORK ON MY PS3. BEFORE I BOUGHT IT, I READ THE 1 STAR COMMENT FROM THE (I WAS UP FOR 7 HOURS) GUY AND I LMAO AT HIS COMMENT THINKING THIS PROBLEM WON’T HAPPEN TO ME. BUT I’M NOT LAUGHING NOW CAUSE I’M VICTIM NUMBER 2. I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS THE GUY STATED. I GAVE THIS THING A 1 STAR BECAUSE THE HDD WAS NOT FOUND ON THE PS3. I CAN’T QUITE RULE OUT IF THIS IS A 1) COMPATIBILITY ISSUE AND 2) IF IT NEEDS TO BE FORMATTED WITH A DIFFERENT SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD. I TRIED FORMATTING AND INSTALLING IT FOR A FRUSTRATING 2 WEEKS BEFORE RETURNING IT TO TIGERDIRECT FOR A REFUND. AS SOON AS I GET MY MONEY BACK I’M GOING FOR THE WD SCORPIO BLUE 500GB HDD, I HEAR ITS MORE COMPATIBLE FOR THE PS3 AND RELIABLE TOO.

The Seagate 500 GB 5400 RPM Momentus hard drive came along with my new HP Pavilion HDX16t Entertainment Notebook. The warranty of the notebook was 1 year and the hard drive crashed 3 days after one year. HP support was not willing to replace the hard drive because it was out of warranty. Rating: 1 / 5

I’m not sure what the other reviewer did to get his drive working in a PS3, but mine sure doesn’t. My system was originally 60 GB, and I tried to upgrade it with this drive. After the upgrade, I occasionally get an error message saying the drive isn’t found, or a game will freeze when it tries to load data from the HD. Apparently this is a common problem with this model, according to the Seagate product forums. I haven’t yet been able to find a fix for this problem, on this model (some earlier versions could be “fixed” with a jumper). Rating: 2 / 5

    OK folks,

I thought It would be a great idea to change out my 80 GB hard drive for a much bigger – bigger one the 500 GB one Seagate ST9500420AS Momentus 7200. 4 SATA 3Gb/s 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive. I followed all the instructions on the playstation website. It worked fine. However I have advice for the hardcore folks with extra money. First off the folks at Sony I am sure have tested different sizes of hard drives. I highly recommend that you do not upgrade above the largest one that ships with the new playstation machines. Why? Well the system really bogs down when you load that hard drive with hundreds upon hundreds of GB’s of stuff. Photos, music, game saves, games, and anything else that will go on the thing. Plus you will need a way to backup your precious data. Items bought off the Playstation Network. Movies, videos, etc.
However if you do decide to go with this hard drive it does work fine. I highly recommend that you buy yourself a USB 500 GB external hard drive Seagate 500 GB USB 2. 0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905004EXA101-RK (Black)for exclusive use of backing up the PS3 and copying stuff that it allows you to copy. You will need to delete the partition that it comes with and re-partition it with the FAT32 standard. I have tried several, and I mean several different methods of attempting to change the USB drive to any partition above 32 GB. The only software I found to work is from Paragon called Paragon Partition Manager. You will need to purchase it since the demo version does not allow you to delete a partition. This software is the very best so far and does not cost that much. $40.
