The unit fell on the floor from waist level and popped apart. It no longer works. Rating: 1 / 5

This drive comes preformatted for Windows. Mac users will need to format it, but guess what? Disk Utility cannot successfully format any USB drives, including this one. Apple has been aware of this issue since April of 2006, when OS X 10. 4. 6 was released and Disk Utility started to hang when formatting USB drives (see G-Tech’s FAQ, CURRENT FIREWIRE/SATA/USB PRODUCTS, #10). Nearly three years have passed, and the bug hasn’t been fixed, persisting through the 10. 4 point releases and now 10. 5, as well. So your options are to a) buy a different non-USB drive (eg Firewire version of this drive); b) find a CD with 10. 4. 6 on it and use that to format it or c) format it from Terminal mode if you are a power user. Oh, the bundled software for back up etc. will not run on OS X Snow Leopard, but Iomega says they are looking into that. Very disappointing! I have another Iomega drive I love (firewire), so I will get a Firewire version (much faster too) and daisy chain that.

I fully realize I may be the only person who cares about what I’m about to say. . . but I feel I should mention it anyway just in case.

First of all, this drive works just fine from Windows. Since 99. 99% of buyers will purchase it for use in Windows, it’s important I say that first.

However, this 3rd generation drive does NOT work from DOS. The previous two generations, the little rectangle (1st) and the flask (2nd), DO work perfectly from DOS (both USB and Firewire). . . so they somehow broke DOS compatibility with this 3rd generation drive.

In case you’re curious, I use these Iomega external hard drives to backup all of my PCs. The only way to REALLY get a snapshot backup of Windows is to do it from DOS so Windows isn’t running. I do this using the DOS version of Ghost (I use the 2003 version).

Just wanted to mention it in case anyone else wants to use this drive in such a manner.

Bought this back in November 2009. The product is fantastic. I’m glad I did a little research and selected it. The only thing bad I have to say is about Amazon and how they reduced the price of this item within 7 days of my original purchase and they WOULDN’T make any adjustment. I am now boycotting Amazon. YUP, haven’t bought anything and have taken myself off their mailing list. Sorry Amazon but fair is fair and in this case you guys fell way short! There are other online sites for convenient ordering that are a bit more fair to the customer and THEY got all my business during this holiday season. I am not happy with this purchase at all. The specs indicated good value for the money I paid. Flimsy product that came with the top cover detached. It works OK, but I still have trouble getting my computer to recognize it for scheduled back-ups. The basic installation was easy. Rating: 2 / 5
