Review based on the Dell i546 I received from a big box store.

Pro: Quiet system unit. Adequate memory. Very affordable.

Odd: The system unit came with or somehow I ended up with both Internet Explorer 32 bit and 64 bit editions. The IE icons on the screen bring up the 32 bit edition. The system unit does not have a parallel printer port. Possibly a USB to parallel cable will solve this omission.

Con: The Dell install booklet in my box was written for VISTA, not Windows 7 which was on the system unit. The DVD door on my system unit keeps the DVD tray from fully closing part of the time. I suspect that this part of the PC is of very low quality. The biggest con occured when I tried to install Microsoft Office 2003. The install repeatedly failed. I tried both my 2003 full edition and my student edition. Google sources correctly claim that installing Office 2003 on a Windows 7 system is a 50/50 deal. Finally I was able to acquire and install with some difficulty, Microsoft Office 2007 enterprise edition. The MS Office icons hid themselves under the MS Works tool bar at the top of the screen. I am a moderately experienced computer geek with a growing Microsoft hate attitude.

I bought an Inspiron 545 in July 2009. It is a quad core Q9400, 750 G HD, 23″ Screen, 8 G of Ram, for $900. This is not the same machine. Seems odd to me to have the same model number morf into a substantially inferior machine in 5 months. I have always liked Amazon, but this sets back my opinion. Rating: 1 / 5

I want to save you time, money and frustration. We owned a Dell computer for three years with only minor issues. HOWEVER once we did have a pretty major issue Dell customer service was appalling. We were told we would have to pay a one time fix fee of $130 to take care of the issues. Ok. Then we are told we would have to purchase a different firewall -even though we already had a major name brand firewall installed. Ok another $75 fine. Then we needed an external hardrive and a startup cd to backup our system before they could reset the computer to its original state. Fine. This was on a Friday. The external hard drive and CD would be here Monday. Fine. Monday comes and goes external hard drive arrives a mere 250G which is currently selling for $75 in store. . . cost us $150. Can you say rip off? No CD. I call Dell support and was told the required CD would arrive Tuesday. Tuesday comes and goes -nothing. Call them back and they assure me that the CD would arrive Friday after being overnighted that Thursday and they offered a tracking number. I call the shipping company who tells me that the disk could not arrive because they never recieved the disk to ship. I call Dell and they tell me they sent the disk. Meanwhile it is the month of December. All my contacts, my Christmas shopping, my online business -everything is tied up at this point and hanging on the arrival for this disk. Having easily spent over 36 hours on the phone at this point with customer service (the first call took a straight 9 hours in itself) I decided to take matters in my own hands. I go door to door knocking checking with my neighbors to borrow their start up disk. I obtain the startup disk and call Dell to help with the process. After several hours on the phone we are told that we did not need the CD or the external hard drive to correct this problem and that we would be charged an additional one time fix fee of $130 to go further with our situation. Not only were we misled into purchasing products we did not need but they are refusing to refund the one time fix fee -THAT NEVER FIXED THE PROBLEM. If you purchase a Dell computer do not be surprised if you misled, given the runaround and have a similar situation. You have been warned. -We bought a new computer instead of Christmas gifts this year. Rating: 1 / 5

I recieved this computer via UPS from Amazon last evening and the setup was real easy and basic, as are my computer needs. I have to manage email, music, word processing and internet. As stated by others, the 21 inch HD monitor is fantastic. The supplied mouse, keyboard and stereo speakers are a bit cheapy, but adequate. I can upgrade these later if I wish.
The computer and Windows 7 is lightning fast, at least to my standards as this replaces a 12 year old Gateway. Great price and Amazon deliverd very quickly, considering it was their free super saver shipping. I am very happy indeed.
