It works well but is not practical to use when it is on your side and not the automatic replacement of the CD’s or is cumbersome in the replacement of the cd’sCiro Rating: 3 / 5

Acer is a good company, but this product is new and people should wait for the next version. Nero would be better as the burning software coming with the drive. I bought it because of the pricing game played with the prices of different drives going up and down. Rating: 1 / 5

The external optical drive is light-weight and handy for travel. Without the stand it takes up very little space. It seems flimsy, but it works. I haven’t tried burning a disk yet.

I think it is deceptive for the manufacturer to claim on the product page that you can burn movie DVDs on this device. Sure you can — I suppose — if you shell out for additional software. The software that comes with the machine is not fully featured. You have to “upgrade” it to get that feature. Since it’s the main feature I bought the thing for, I am extremely displeased and feel ripped off. I have a Flip Video camera and thought this would be so great for traveling – download my video off the Flip every night at the hotel, and eventually mix it all up and burn it onto a DVD. Wrong. Now all my Flip video will be on the hard drive of my netbook, but I still won’t be able to get it off of there and into a playable format until I purchase additional software. I am not a happy camper. Seriously wondering if I can return the thing. Rating: 2 / 5

ASUS USB 2. 0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U (White)

Had been holding off editing my original comment hoping to hear from Asus. No such luck!

Am happy to report that this external drive IS compatible with the iMac after testing each of the USB ports. However I’ll upgrade my review to only four stars due to the location of the eject button, flimsy tray and lack of customer service. The tray needs to be supported from underneath when inserting a disk on its spring-loaded spindle. The unit is a nice-looking addition to the computer desk, foot print barely larger than a CD jewel case and exactly twice as high. Asus would do well in advertising it as Mac-compatible rather than expecting users doing it for them. Don’t bother to fill out the intrusive and lengthy product registration form since I doubt they would respond to any repair claims anyway.

To the Wall Street Journal reader: Apple has a fabulous customer service. Send them an email and they’ll call you back at a time of your choosing from a US location.
